Dear Period 4 and 8,

I am hoping that you have finished reading your book and can complete another journal entry (#2) for Monday.  I will be able to give you feedback on your first journal tomorrow.  Let’s plan on the third journal entry for Wednesday.  Hope that sounds ok for you.  See you Monday.

Now that you have completed your language research, I would like you to review your lists of words and made some observation and reflections.

Please write/type your response in paragraphs to the following questions, which are merely a guide for your language analysis.

1.  What do you notice about your list of words?

- Are specific words repeated each day?  Do these repetitions have any significance?

- What is the shared language of the class?  Is it mostly subject-related?  How much language reflects social interaction?

- Do any words stand out to you?  Why?

- Who has the power of speech in the class?  Teacher? Students in the class?  Particular students?

- What does your collection of words suggest about the discourse in the class?  Through language, what have you learned about the class that the teacher/s and students share?  What have you learned about the tone/mood of the class?  How has language shaped the class/space/activity?  Any other thoughts about what the language suggests?

2. From your very specific study, what assumptions can you make about language itself?   In other words, have you learned about the power/influence of language?  Does it have the capacity to define a reality?

3. Were you aware of silences in the class/space/activity you observed?  What do those silences tell you?  If those silences were broken through speech, how would that speech affect the class, do you think?

For Thursday, please have your lists of words typed as well as your analysis (1 and a half to 2 pages).

In addition, if you have not handed in your first journal on the author project, please have it by tomorrow.  Thanks so much.

In addtion to the two responses listed on the website last week, I would like you to write a final response now that we have finished viewing the film.  Simply, what are you left thinking about?  Choose one assumption/question in particular and explore your own viewpoint.  In this response, I would like you to make meaning of the film for yourself.  Length:  2 pages

Let’s start reviewing the vocabulary listed below.

English 10, Periods 4 and 8

I would like you to respond to the film again tonight. Do you see a repetition of some of the film techniques you noticed in the early part of the film? Also, what ideas from the early part are confirmed/explored in the part you saw today? Mr. Keating quotes Thoreau: “Most men and [women!] lead lives of quiet desperation.” Do you agree? Disagree? What are your tthoughts?

As an introduction to our poetry unit, we will view Dead Poet’s Society.  Each night I would like you to reflect on the film, both its content and its form.   How do you find yourself responding to the content of the film? For this question, make sure you are reflecting on the subject not describing the plot.  As for the form/style, what choices do you think the film director is making to portray the subject(s)?  You might consider lighting, angles, sound, close-ups….You should consider this reflection a typed journal entry.  Length: 1 and 1/2 to 2 pages                  Thank you.
